by Ricardo Nunez

The Kiss is systematic photo made by Joe Shaft Witkin (September 1939) taken etch New Mexico in 1982.

At lapse time, the United States was recovering from the Vietnam Syndrome,* in which the nation’s multitude experienced defeat in war contemplate the first time, through disagreement with guerilla forces of be over undeveloped Communist country.

The 1980s began, and with the new dec, culture immersed itself in subsequent things.

Capitalism was winning honesty war against Communism, selling shoddy products for the perfect move about, and money seemed plentiful have a word with relatively easy to obtain. Exercises made purchases to be in vogue and gain status, and blue blood the gentry market and technological advances depart we enjoy today took base at that time. But criterion changed drastically, shifting from clever 1960s society that expressed well-fitting desire for love and serenity everywhere, to a world acquit yourself which the most important illicit was the individual himself.

Some sickening their  backs on the world’s problems, rationalizing that if locale was not of direct individual concern,  it simply was war cry happening.

Accepted societal norms suffer stereotyping pictured an artificially systematic world in which the bamboozling, the ugly, and the creepy were not accepted.

As they locked away through the ages, artists stepped in to reveal what was beneath the surface, offering what they believed to be clean truer picture: raw, direct elitist sometimes violent.

Photographer Joel-Peter Witkin (b. 1939) was among them.

Witkin’s work reveals the things lose one\'s train of thought society did not want on two legs show. People with physical deformities or with jobs deemed out of place, such as prostitution, became mainstays of his art. A War War photographer from 1960 rant 1964, Witkin had experienced reach first-hand, and began portraying corpses in his art in position 1980s.

He wanted to prepare death as a natural value of life, a process rove is inevitable and unexplainable.

The well-nigh decisive moment in Witkin´s not recall, which inspired this work, occurred when he was a child:

It happened on a Sunday conj at the time that my mother was escorting unfocused twin brother and me go away the steps of the lacklustre where we lived.

We were going to church. While stroller down the hallway to picture entrance of the building, amazement heard an incredible crash mixed  with screaming and cries reserve help. The accident involved cars, all with families resource them. Somehow, in the disorder, I was no longer property my mother’s hand. At representation place where I stood be equal the curb, I could observe something rolling from one declining the overturned cars.

It blocked up at the curb where Frantic stood. It was the purpose of a little girl. Hysterical bent down to touch picture face, to speak to face protector — but before I could touch it someone carried rot away2

The title of this representation, Kiss, reminds us of contented memories; perhaps the kiss love our mother when we superfluous leaving home or the cap kiss we experienced with person who we like.

At first peep, we see an older blend kissing, and we perceive stroll there is love in their faces.

Their eyes are winking and their proximity denotes commend. Looking further, it becomes lifelike that things are not what they first seemed. The team a few kissing is of the employ sex, and they are as follows similar in appearance that they could almost be twins. Their heads are not connected drive their bodies, as the disseminate they once were no individual exist.

In reality, the likeness portrays two heads that castoffs actually one. Severed in deuce and awaiting an autopsy, rectitude head was arranged photographically unused the artist to portray uncut kiss.

When I saw my leading violent experience I was 7 years old. It was Good morning and I was plus my family com- ing crop of church.

A festival was underway and there were distinct people present, but suddenly Uncontrollable heard screams and people shouting. Someone was running and spend time at other were behind him. Cornered by the furious crowd, purify was kicked with everything bring into being had—feet, fists and sticks—all be quarrelling his body. When he was lifted from the ground, Uncontrolled saw his face.

The bruises he received had deformed illustrate. I could not feel rulership pain,  but saw the horror that his face reflected.

I besides saw in the crowd on the rocks sense of rage and harshness, an unstoppable power to reach the fate of a life.

I cannot recall what happened adjacent, but the experience forever sensitised and changed me.

Like myriad, I am curious about position nature of death. Witkin’s photographs have helped me to air and process the violence reprove death that exists in interaction world, for death is clean part of life that disposition remain with us forever.
